Culture

There are many ways to define Culture. Culture is social heritage, or tradition, that is passed on to future generations. It is a "wardrobe" of signs people put out to each other, indicating where they are coming from and what they are about. It marks what makes us different from one another.

Culture involves at least three components: human behavior (what people think, what they do), and the material products they produce. Thus, mental processes, beliefs, knowledge, and values are parts of culture.

Culture in the Philippines
The culture of the Philippines is one of the most unique and diverse among the nations in Southeast Asia. It is marked by a true blend of East and West. The original ethnic background of the people is Indonesian and Malay. However due to migration and other historical occurences, there are Chinese and Spanish elements as well. Later American rule an
d contact with merchants and traders culminated in a unique blend of East and West, both in the appearance and culture of the Filipinos.

Hospitality, a trait displayed by every Filipino, makes these people legendary in Southeast Asia. Seldom can you find such hospitable people who enjoy the company of their visitors. Perhaps due to their long association with Spain and its influence, Filipinos are emotional and passionate about life in a way that seems more Latin than Asian.

Religion

In the Philippines, religion plays almost a daily role in the lives of its citizens, regardless of belief or affiliation. More than 90% of the people are Christian; most were converted and Westernized to varying degrees during nearly 400 years of Spanish and forty years of American rule. Colonial influence may be responsible for the introduction of Roman Catholicism to the islands as the records of the Spanish occupation will confirm, however, the indigenous traditions still survive. Proof of this is that the Negritos, Malay and other tribes had a complex belief system that predates Spanish and even 14th century Arab Muslim influences and includes the concept of a Supreme Creator. Upon this indigenous religious base, a process of cultural adaptation and synthesis began that is still continuing into the 21st century.

Heritage

Several sites in the country have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

  • Baroque Churches of the Philippines
  • Historic Town of Vigan
  • Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park
  • Banaue Rice Terraces
  • Tubbataha Reef Marine Park
